Bio

Tania C. Araujo-Jorge is Full Professor and Director of IOC/Fiocruz. She advised the Strategic Advisory Committee of the TDR/WHO from 2008-2011, and permanently advises the Brazilian Council of Research (CNPq), the Health Ministry (Decit-MS) and the Rio de Janeiro Research Support Agency (FAPERJ). Her lines of research are immune, nutritional and chemical therapies for Chagas disease, health education, laughter for health promotion, science and art. She has actively developed social and educational technologies and contributed to public policies, especially the choice of priorities for research on neglected diseases/infectious diseases of poverty, and its interconnection with the Program Brazil without Misery, including Science Expeditions to different regions of Brazil. She has published more than 110 papers in indexed international journals, organized 4 books and published over 20 book chapters, and has established a strong network of interactions with researchers in Brazil, Latin America, Europe, China and the United States. She supervised 35 PhD/MSc, post-doctoral fellows, and many undergraduate and graduate students. She worked actively for the dissemination and popularization of science and created a MSc/PhD Program for Education in Biosciences and Health. Dr. Araujo-Jorge received her MD and PhD from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She joined the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) as a researcher in 1982, followed by postdoctoral studies in Belgium and France.
